Dr. Billy Ray Price was recently named as the 2019 recipient of the Walter E. Harrison, Jr., M.D. Humanitarian Award. Price was presented the award at the 25th Annual Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation Love Light ceremony held in the Kate Jeter Serenity Garden.

The award, named in honor of beloved physician Dr. Walter E. Harrison, Jr., is presented annually to an individual health care worker who demonstrates a commitment to compassionate health care service and community outreach. These were the guiding principles of Harrison’s medical career.

Dr. Harrison believed in helping those in need and he practiced this belief both at home and in medical missions abroad. Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation established the award following Harrison’s death in December of 2010.

Price began his career at Colquitt Regional as a family medicine doctor in June of 1988. During his tenure, he has served within the organization as Chief of Staff and Chief of Medicine.

“While each nominee was equally deserving, Dr. Price’s dedication to providing quality healthcare made him an excellent choice and we are proud to honor him with this award,” said Jim Matney, president and CEO of Colquitt Regional. “The principles that Dr. Harrison was known for are the same ones that Dr. Price exemplifies through his work on a daily basis.”

In addition to the care he provides for his patients at Sterling Group Primary Care, Price has also served as medical director for Colquitt Regional Hospice for over 20 years. Through his work with hospice, Price demonstrates his unfailing commitment to patient care through attending weekly hospice meetings, instructing staff members, reviewing care plans, and making house visits, where he spends time with each patient.

“We are so grateful to have Dr. Price on staff at Colquitt Regional,” said John Mark Mobley, Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation Chairman. “He consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty. The work he does, especially at Home Care Services, has made a difference in the lives of so many in our community.”

Upon receiving the award, Price relayed his gratitude and appreciation for the honor.

“An award of this nature helps me to appreciate more fully the women and men around me,” said Price. “It is through their service, sacrifice, and dedication that I am blessed with the opportunities embodied by this award.”

Previous recipients of the Harrison Humanitarian award include David Spence, RT (R, ARRT); Karen G. Hart, RN, CMSRN; Barbara James, RN; Dr. D.W. Adcock; Dr. Patricia Lee June; Denise Linnenkohl, RN; and Dr. Seth Berl.
