Colquitt Regional holds interprofessional training exercise

Colquitt Regional recently held an interprofessional development training exercise for the current participants in the Nurse Residency Program and the Georgia South Family Medicine Residency Program.

Both groups participated in role-playing scenarios that covered communication styles, standardized medical reporting through SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendations), conflict resolution, and communicating effectively in emergencies.

This type of team-based training was introduced with the purpose of preparing all health professionals to work together to build a safer, higher quality, patient-centered health care system.

“As health care education continues to evolve, Colquitt Regional is ensuring that employees and students are educated on the latest methods and protocols in patient safety,” said Jim Matney, Colquitt Regional president and CEO. “While the medical field is ever changing, patient safety remains our top priority. Training exercises such as these are vital in providing a diversified, comprehensive learning experience.”

Interprofessional collaboration has shown many positive effects in hospitals across the world, such as improved patient outcomes, reduced preventable errors, decreased healthcare costs, and improved relationships with other disciplines.

“This particular training exercise was designed to equip the participants with the tools and skillsets they need to be successful in their careers,” said Dr. Woodwin Weeks, Associate Program Director, Georgia South. “The collaboration between the nurse residents and medical residents allows them hands-on experience and a realistic picture of what they will be facing in their future work.”

This exercise was conducted with the help of Weeks; Dr. Nick Carden, Behavioral Medicine Faculty, Georgia South; Kayla Long, RN, Clinical Informatics; Jared Swift, BSN, RN, Nurse Residency Coordinator; and Jessica Rivenbark, vice president, Colquitt Regional Medical Education and Governmental Affairs.
