Q: What is coronavirus disease 2019?

A: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.


Q: How does COVID-19 spread?

A: The virus that causes COVID-19 probably emerged from an animal source, but is now spreading from person to person. The virus is thought to spread mainly between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It also may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Q: What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

A: Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.

The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.*

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

*This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses.

If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion or inability to arouse
  • Bluish lips or face

Q: Is Colquitt Regional testing for COVID-19?

A: Yes, we do have tests available and are actively testing patients. If you believe you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms there are a couple options for you in seeking medical advice.

- If you have a primary care physician call your doctor. All Sterling Physician Group physicians are seeing patients via virtual care. They may be able to schedule an appointment with you virtually so they can access your symptoms and determine if you should be tested for COVID-19.

-If you do not have a primary care physician, call our COVID-19 HOTLINE at 229-891-9380. This hotline is staffed by a medical professional each day from 8 am – 5 pm. During these hours we have a phyician that can conduct a virtual screening with you and determine if you should be tested for COVID-19.

If your physician determines that you should be tested you will receive instructions and a time to visit our COVID-19 testing site. We are testing patients at the testing site daily Monday-Friday. *We are able to conduct tests for Emergency Department patients and Colquitt Regional Inpatients seven days a week.


Q: How long does it take to receive my results after I have been tested for COVID-19?

A: It has been taking up to seven to eight days for COVID-19 results to be received because the off-site labs that are running these tests are inundated right now. We have had great success recently with other commercial labs that are able to process tests much more quickly. It is our hope that from this point forward we will be able to drastically reduce the wait time on results.
