Our Nurse Extern program offers senior nursing students a 12-month program that features immersion in the role of a professional nurse. Our one-year Nurse Residency Program (NRP) supports new nurse graduates in their transition into their first professional role.

Nurse Extern Program
The Nurse Extern program offers senior nursing students a 12-month program in which the extern will be immersed in the role of a professional nurse. Externs will work side-by-side with a registered nurse, providing hands-on patient care and developing clinical reasoning skills necessary for quality patient care delivery.

Nurse Residency Program
The Nurse Residency Program (NRP) supports new nurse graduates as they transition into their first professional role as caregivers. This extensive one-year program features a series of learning and hands-on experience that develops clinical leadership skills necessary to become a successful member of the healthcare team.
How the Programs Work
This 12-month program for senior nursing students offers an opportunity to work side-by-side with a registered nurse. You will provide hands-on patient care and develop clinical reasoning skills essential to your future success. Work areas include critical care, progressive care/stepdown, emergency, obstetrics, pediatrics and medical/surgical nursing units.
- Senior nursing students in ADN or BSN program
- Flexible scheduling around school requirements
- Maximum of 24 hours/week
- 6-week rotations through all nursing units
- Priority job placement upon graduation, if available
Program Objectives
Upon completion of the program, you will:
- Demonstrate increased proficiency in clinical skills
- Develop time-management and organizational skills required for professional nursing
- Grow in understanding your role as a professional nurse
- Gain self-confidence in your role as a professional nurse
Qualifications
- 3.0 GPA at hire and throughout the program
- Able to meet Colquitt Regional job-related requirements
- BLS Certification for healthcare providers from the American Heart Association
- Work commitment: Cannot contract with another facility following graduation

Successful applicants will submit:

- Two letters of recommendation from a nursing school institution
This program features a series of learning and hands-on experiences that develop clinical leadership skills and support new nurse graduates in transition to your first professional role.
- 12-month program
- Two cohorts per year
- Topics reviewed by content experts that promote resident engagement
- One 4-hour seminar each month
- Clinical reflection time allows nurse residents to share day-to-day experiences among peers
- A completed evidence-based initiative by each nurse resident; a project that aims to improve a work-flow process, enhance patient care delivery, or implement an employee empowerment tool

Eligibility
- Graduate of an accredited nursing degree program (ADN, BSN)
- Less than one year of experience in nursing
- Commitment to 12 scheduled seminars
- Completion of evidenced-based initiative
- All new hires that fit the criteria required to complete the program

This comprehensive 12-week program is designed to provide nurses with less than one year of experience in the Med/Surg specialty with a structured, supportive pathway to competence and confidence in the role. Throughout this program, you will engage in a blend of classroom learning, hands-on simulations, and skills labs, alongside real-time, on-the-job training with a preceptor in your department. Our dedicated Med/Surg Nurse Educator will continue to mentor you through your first year to ensure continued growth and development. Upon completion of this program, you will also participate in the Nurse Residency Program to further enhance your skills and confidence.

- Week 5: Classroom, Simulation, & Skills Training (2 days) / Pediatric/Surgical Breakout (2 days)
- Week 6: Precepting Shifts Independent care for 2 patients
- Week 7: Precepting Shifts Independent care for 2 patients
- Week 8: Precepting Shifts Independent care for 3 patients
- Week 9: Precepting Shifts Independent care for 4 patients
- Week 10: Precepting Shifts Independent care for 4 patients
- Week 11: Precepting Shifts Independent care for 6 patients
- Week 12: Precepting Shifts Independent care for 6 patients
