The Georgia South Family Medicine Residency Program has matched with its tenth class of residents. The Family Medicine Class of 2028 includes David Green, M.D., Melissa Joseph, M.D., Allyson Pel, D.O., and Dylan Patel, M.D.
For its fourth year, the Georgia South Psychiatry Residency Program has matched with three new residents. These residents, who will spend four years training in the psychiatry program, include Mailyn Cruz, D.O., Caleb Rowan, M.D., and Sami Khan, M.D.
In a residency program, “matching” means that the doctors selected by Georgia South also chose Georgia South as their preferred training site. This year, these seven residents were chosen from a highly competitive pool of 1086 applicants.
“In 2016, we welcomed our inaugural class of three Family Medicine residents,” said Colquitt Regional President and CEO Jim Matney. “Since then, we have expanded with the addition of a psychiatry residency program and currently have 24 residents training at Georgia South. In addition, we are excited to be in the process of launching a new Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program in partnership with Wellstar Health System. This continued growth reflects both the increasing demand for physicians in our region and our steadfast commitment to training the next generation of healthcare providers right here in South Georgia.”
Georgia South continues to attract top medical talent, with seven of its graduates now practicing medicine in Colquitt County. These include Jessica Mitchum, D.O., Michael Magat, D.O., Catie Duskin, D.O., Kayla Batchelor, D.O., Ethan McBrayer, D.O., Jermaine Robinson, D.O., and Stephen Yarbrough, D.O.
Each year, graduating medical students nationwide undergo a rigorous application process for residency programs. This process involves an online application, multiple interviews, and a ranking system in which both applicants and programs list their preferences. On the designated national Match Day, the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) reveals the final placements.
“As we welcome this new group of residents, we look forward to welcoming them to Colquitt Regional and the broader Colquitt County community,” said Hospital Authority Chairman John Griffin. “These exceptional individuals represent the future of medicine, and we are honored to be part of their educational journey.”
The new academic year begins in the summer of 2025, and a formal ceremony will be held later this year to officially welcome the incoming residents.
