Colquitt Regional Announces Plans for Medical Housing Facility

Colquitt Regional is proud to announce plans for the construction of a new housing facility designed to support medical professionals training and working within Colquitt Regional Health System.

Located at the corner of South Main Street and 31st Avenue, the new building will boast 16 modern units, offering temporary housing for medical students completing rotations, on-call physicians, and employees who may be unable to safely travel to and from work during inclement weather.

The housing facility is designed to be both functional and attractive. It will feature well-maintained landscaping with the privacy of neighboring properties in mind. Additionally, the facility will have a security presence provided by Colquitt Regional’s security department, ensuring a safe environment for all residents.

“Colquitt Regional is proud to be a growing hub for medical education in Southwest Georgia,” said Colquitt Regional President and CEO Jim Matney. “As we expand our services and training opportunities, it is essential to provide housing for the students who come here to train. This initiative not only supports their educational journey but also gives them valuable exposure to practicing medicine in a rural area, helping them understand the unique challenges and rewards of healthcare in smaller communities.”

Colquitt Regional has strong partnerships with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), the University of Georgia (UGA), Emory University, and Morehouse College, among others. Students from these institutions come to Moultrie to complete part of their medical rotations within Colquitt Regional Health System. However, finding short-term housing can be challenging. This new facility will provide a convenient place for them to stay while they gain hands-on experience in Moultrie.

By making it easier for medical students and professionals to train here, this initiative will help strengthen the local healthcare workforce. It also positively impacts the community by attracting students who support the local economy and may choose to return to South Georgia to practice medicine in the future.

“Having this housing available will be a tremendous asset not only for Colquitt Regional but for the entire community,” said Hospital Authority Chairman John Griffin. By providing a reliable lodging option for medical staff and visiting professionals, we are ensuring that our hospital remains well-staffed and prepared to meet the healthcare needs of our community. This project strengthens our health system, supports economic growth, and enhances access to quality medical care for our patients.”
