Plastic Surgery

The field of Plastic Surgery can be broken down into two main categories – reconstructive procedures and cosmetic or aesthetic procedures. Both are generally considered sub- specialties of plastic surgery.

Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery is performed to restore function and normal appearance and to correct physical deformities caused by birth defects, trauma or medical conditions including cancer. Examples include breast reconstruction following a lumpectomy or mastectomy for breast cancer, wound restoration and trauma reconstruction, pediatric reconstruction due to congenital anomalies, scar revision, skin cancer treatment and reconstructive surgery after burn injuries. Typically, reconstructive surgery is considered medically necessary and is covered by most health insurance plans.

Aesthetic Surgery

Aesthetic surgery is performed to enhance overall appearance by reshaping and adjusting normal anatomy to make it visually more appealing. Breast augmentation or reduction, gynecomastia, blepharoplasty, neck or face lift, botox and fillers are popular examples of aesthetic surgery procedures. Other examples include post-bariatric body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, brachioplasty and thighplasty.

Hand Surgery

Carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, ganglion cysts and structural repair after traumatic injuries are examples of hand surgery that is included in the field of plastic surgery.
