Edwards Cancer Center Now Offering High Dose Radiation Brachytherapy

Colquitt Regional Medical Center is proud to announce the introduction of High Dose Radiation (HDR) Brachytherapy at Edwards Cancer Center. This advanced therapy will significantly enhance Edwards Cancer Center’s ability to provide precise and effective radiation treatment, furthering its commitment to providing comprehensive cancer care for its patient base.

HDR Brachytherapy is a radiation therapy technique that delivers targeted radiation directly to cancerous tissue by placing a radioactive source near or within the tumor. This approach allows for higher radiation doses to be administered precisely to the affected area while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue.

“We are proud, once again, to expand our oncology service line so that our patients may receive advanced, high-quality care without the burden of having to travel,” said Colquitt Regional President and CEO Jim Matney. “This technology offers us the ability to tailor treatments to meet the unique needs of each patient.”

In addition to the benefit of precision, HDR Brachytherapy offers fewer side effects than alternative forms of radiation therapy, quicker recovery times, and is a minimally-invasive, outpatient procedure that allows patients to return back to their normal routines quickly. Patients who undergo HDR Brachytherapy typically receive between three to five treatments over the course of two weeks.

Edwards Cancer Center is currently treating patients with gynecologic cancers such as cervical, uterine, and endometrial. HDR Brachytherapy can be utilized to treat a wide range of cancers such as breast, tongue, prostate, and lung, among others.

“With the addition of this service, we have made another step forward in delivering cutting-edge cancer care for our community,” said Hospital Authority Chairman Richard E. Turner, Jr. “This advancement reflects our dedication to implementing the latest technologies and procedures to ensure that patients receive the most effective, personalized treatments available.”

The integration of HDR Brachytherapy at Colquitt Regional is the latest addition to its growing oncology service line. In 2018, the hospital opened the Edwards Cancer Center, and in 2021, it further expanded by adding a radiation oncology unit. In 2023, the Edwards Cancer Center was proud to add another service, gynecologic oncology, to its lineup.
