Colquitt Regional Hosts Regional Trauma Skills Lab

Colquitt Regional Medical Center recently hosted a successful Georgia Trauma Skills Procedure Lab at its state-of-the-art Medical Education Center, offering hands-on trauma training for first responders, healthcare professionals, and medical teams across EMS region eight of Georgia (Southwest Georgia).

The event, a collaborative effort between the Georgia EMS Association and the Georgia Trauma Commission, provided participants with invaluable opportunities to practice essential trauma care skills and stay up-to-date on the latest medical procedures and best practices in trauma management.

The interdisciplinary training event was open to a wide range of healthcare professionals, including EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, nurses, respiratory therapists, and physicians. With a focus on practical, hands-on education, the event gave participants the chance to engage in skill-building exercises and trauma simulations designed to enhance their ability to respond effectively in high-stress, emergency situations.

“This training reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting our regional healthcare providers by offering cutting-edge educational opportunities that improve patient care and trauma response capabilities,” said Colquitt Regional President and CEO Jim Matney. “The hands-on, real-world training our participants received will have a lasting impact on their ability to provide life-saving care in the field.”

The Georgia Trauma Skills Procedure Lab featured a rotating series of skill stations, where participants received specialized training in a variety of critical trauma procedures, including direct/video laryngoscopy, nasal intubation, chest needle decompression and anatomy, difficult airway simulation, and bleeding control and wound packing simulation.

At each station, participants practiced these life-saving techniques on cadavers in a controlled, supervised environment designed to enhance their understanding of human anatomy and physiology. This hands-on training allowed them to develop skills and confidence in providing effective care, with a focus on guided learning.

In addition to improving technical skills, the event allowed healthcare providers to network with colleagues from across the region, fostering collaboration and camaraderie among first responders and medical professionals. Participants also earned continued education credits for their participation, helping them meet ongoing certification requirements while gaining a deeper understanding of the latest trauma care guidelines, techniques, and evidence-based practices.

The training event was made possible by Colquitt Regional’s successful application to become a host site for the Georgia Trauma Skills Procedure Lab, in partnership with the Georgia EMS Association and the Georgia Trauma Commission. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing trauma care in Georgia and enhancing the preparedness of healthcare teams across the state.

“Working with the Georgia EMS Association and Georgia Trauma Commission to bring this training to our region is an excellent opportunity to continue improving trauma care in our community,” said Hospital Authority Chairman John Griffin. “We look forward to offering future training events and continuing to be a leader in medical education in South Georgia.”
